Abbas extends peace proposal to Israel - Ramallah: Mahmud Abbas offered peace to Israel after securing the Palestinian presidency with a landslide victory. He has urged the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon to meet him as soon as possible. Though the official final results are still to be declared, Abbas has almost 63 per cent of the vote.

Sharon to arrange Summit with Abbas - A reinvigorated Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon was phoning newly elected Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas today to arrange a meeting in the near future with a view to establishing peace.

Iraq Insurgents killed 20 persons outside Police HQ in a car bomb - TIKRIT, Iraq, A car bomb killed at least six people outside the police headquarters in Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit on Tuesday as insurgents struck yet again at Iraq's beleaguered security forces ahead of Jan. 30 elections.  Hospital officials said 20 killed and five wounded were all members of the police force in Tikrit, a Sunni Muslim stronghold 175 km north of Baghdad.

Hoon to send 400 more troops to Iraq - About 400 extra British troops are being sent to Iraq to shore up security ahead of the elections scheduled for the end of this month, the government said yesterday.
