China’s Ambassador gives indistinct answer on Indo-US Nuke Deal

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: August 19, 2008 – IR Summary/Agencies -Chinese Ambassador to India Zhang Yan, who visited Kerala,said today, China has no concern over the Indo-US civil nuclear deal so far New Delhi fulfills relevant international obligations.”

"India can enjoy right to peaceful nuclear energy provided it fulfils international obligations, if it does not weaken international nuclear non-proliferation regime", he said on Monday. "If the concerns of the international community are taken care of, then, I think it can achieve its objective". The comments are not encouraging.

When asked if China was concerned over India moving closer to the United States, he answered: "It is India’s own foreign policy, I am no body to say anything about it?"

When asked about the affir of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, who voluntarily stepped down and left the Presidency, the ambassador answered that he doesn’t like to comment on this issued.

 “It is just an international news to me," he said.

Asked whether Musharraf's exit would bear any impact on fundamentalist trends in Pakistan, he said "I prefer not to discuss. However, he said, “We shall watch the developments".
