Gujjars settlement in sight, Govt. to invite delegation for talks

Jaipur/Bayana, Rajasthan, India: June 7, 2008 – IR Summary – A letter is reported to have been sent to Rajasthan Govt. by the agitating Gujjars today expressing their desire to hold talks to settle the issue once for all. "A three-line letter from Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla, patron of the Gurjar Arakshan Sangarsh Samiti, has been received by the government representative," a state government official confirmed in Jaipur. The letter contains that they are ready for talks at Bayana today afternoon but there is no mention of the names and numbers of the people likely to attend the meet and represent their community. The decision to hold talks with the government was taken at a meeting of top Gujjar leaders including some intellectuals. It is in connection with Gujjars’ demand of ST status for their community. He said the state government would necessary reply to the letter soon where and when to invite. Bainsala fees, "Everything is likely to happen according to the expectations." "We have only one demand: that the state government should send a recommendation granting ST status to Gujjars," he said.
