Mumbai: November 8, 2007 - The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has conveyed to Board President Sharad Pawar that since Sachin Tendulkar has declined captaincy of the Indian team for the Tests, they have selected another Captain.
They further wrote that the only choice left with them is to select M.S.Dhoni as Captain for Pakistan and Australian series. The surprise move has gone in favor of Kumble.
The BCCI prefers that there should be only one Captain for all forms of the game. Though the selectors were taken by surprise by Tendulkar’s refusal to become Captain, they had no other alternative but to name Dhoni as Captain for all games.
But another announcement looks to have been made to snatch captaincy from Dhoni. The name of Kumble as Skipper is taken up and finalized by BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah, who walked away from Mohali because of prior commitment, Shah wanted the meeting to be held at the earliest on Friday but could not get the selectors to agree, thereby adding the drama surrounding the issue that Kumble should be selected as Captain. So in a surprise announcement around midnight, Kumble's name has been selected as Test Captain for the Pakistan Series.
If Tendulkar had accepted Captaincy, Dhoni would have been the Vice-Captain. Over and above, Tendulkar wants Dhoni to continue as Captain in all games, he said, “The team is doing well” and it would not be advisable to disturb the team at this stage, when all of them are in a good form.
Though India has lost the 2nd ODI from Pakistan today, it was a good name, a very good game, both teams fought well, marginal defeat, but the morale of the Indian team remained high till the last 4 balls. It was luck that gave victory to Pakistan, even though they also fought well. The credit goes to Dhoni as Capatain as a whole.
