Supreme Court issues notice to Karunanidhi for defying court orders

New Delhi: October 29, 2007 – IR Summary - The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for defying court orders in which it was ordered to call off Bandh on October 1, 2007.

Inspite of orders of the Supreme Court, DMK and its allies supported to observe bandh on October 1, 2007 in support of their stand on the issue of Ram Setu.

The Supreme Court reacting to a petition by former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader Jayalalitha, ordered to call off the Bandh. But despite the order by the Supreme Court, the DMK and its allied political parties did not comply with the direction and supported the bandh, which was partially observed.

The court has now issued a notice to the state government for defying its orders.

The Supreme Court also issued notices to Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, Union Minister TR Balu, and TN DGP.
