Durga Puja pandal in south Delhi burnt down

New Delhi: October 19, 2007-IR Summary- A major fire  broke out  around 4 A.M on early Friday at a Durga Puja pandal in south Delhi but good news that there were no casualties. The fire broke out  in a temporary structure built for the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations in Pocket 40 of Chittaranjan Park, South Delhi, which is the central gathering place for Bengalis.

The fire brigade was immediately informed and that reached there within 45 minutes from all sides. Total seven fire tenders were pressed into service and the blaze was extinguished within an hour.

It was a timely action by the Fire Brigade, since the fire could spread to nearby houses. 

The fire looks to have picked up flames near from the pandal kitchen where the Prasad was being cooked.

The Chittaranjan Park area is the center of the Durga Puja celebrations in the capital and attracts thousands of people for this festival, which is to finish on October 21 with the ceremony of immersion of hundreds of the magnificent clay idols of Durga and her pantheon in the river Yamuna.
