Manmohan Singh thanks Russia for supplying uranium fuel

New Delhi - Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister, expressed 'highappreciation' for Russia on Friday for having agreed to supply emergency uranium fuel to India for safeguarded reactors at Tarapur. The two countries have also decided to expand their partnership in civil nuclear energy and boost bilateral trade to $10 billion in five years.

"I would like to convey our warm appreciation to the Russian government for responding positively to meet the requirements for nuclear fuel supplies to Tarapur I and Tarapur II," Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh told reporters at a joint Press interaction with visiting Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov.

Moscow has agreed to supply about 60 tonnes of uranium fuel for safeguarded reactors at Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) I and II to enable India to run in safe and reliable condition.

"We envision a substantial increase in the sphere of nuclear energy in India's overall energy mix. We see the Kudankulam project as a flagship of our cooperation in this area," Dr Singh said at Hyderabad House after talks with Fradkov.

Russia is helping India build two nuclear reactors at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu.

 "I am confident that both countries will utilize opportunities to expand our partnership in civil nuclear energy cooperation," the Prime Minister stressed.

NIA Chairman Dr. Raj Baldev appreciated the goowill gesture exhibited by the Russian President in New Delhi and said, it would most certainly further strengthen Indo-Russian bilateral relationship."
