Kumble turns the show

MIL/Exoress Cricket, Mar 10, 2006

However, even though rain could be blamed for India not striking a richer vein in terms of more wickets, there was no doubting the fact that both the spinners and pacers had bowled a line that left a lot to be desired allowing the batsmen to hang in there.

But Day 2 began with a positive for India. Both pace and spin were right on line and it pushed both the batsmen (Flintoff and Collingwood) on the backfoot as the runs dried up.

The first goal was to stop the run flow, and once the batsmen were in defensive mode it was only a matter of time before a wicket fell.

Ultimately, it was Kumble who bowled a beauty to get rid of Collingwood.

The batsmen went on front foot with a defending bat, the ball eluded it and crashed into the off stump! He walked off shaking his head as to how it managed to evade his willow, crash his defences and bring down his fort. England 180/5.

Geraint Jones batted sensibly alongside his skipper, but bad light soon stopped play, allowing the visiting side to escape the by-now spinning ball.

But, there was no doubting, watching the Englishmen bat, that they were quite uncomfortable out in the middle and grabbed at the chance the umpires offered to walk off.

In fact, Flintoff barely survived a couple of times having hit the ball into the air, just out of reach of fielders. But his plan of putting into effect an 'attack is the best policy' plan almost backfired. His was a desperate attempt to try and beat the spinners into a less aggressive bowling line.

By 3:30 the umpires had called off tthe play for the day.

England was then on 200/5 in 65 overs and clearly in danger of being wrapped up for an under-300 score. (Courtesy: Express Cricket)
