Varanasi blasts: Police examine live bomb, shoots Suspect

MIL/Agencies, Mar 9, 2006

Varanasi - A day after the gruesome terrorists strike in Varanasi, a joint team of UP and J&K police shot dead Mohammed Saleem Salar alias Doctor.  He was 45 and was one of the most wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants in the country. He was suspected to be the mastermind of the Varanasi blasts.

Police is, however, carrying out more investigations into the deadly blasts in Varanasi. Even though there are little clues in the case, a live bomb, which was recovered from a nearby restaurant in the temple town, is being probed thoroughly.

According to NDTV, the police are also looking at a marriage video that was being filmed when the bomb went off in the Sankat Mochan temple. After the explosion, the Center and the state governments seem to be pitted against each other over who could be behind the blasts.

"We are examining the role of a Lashkar militant. Whether he was the mastermind or just a link in the chain is being looked into," said Alok Sinha, Home Secretary, Uttar Pradesh.
