Rice and NIA appeal to Iran to respect the UN
MIL/Agencies, Jan 16, 2006.
The statement made by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Monday about Iran that it has crossed the threshold with the recent nuclear actions and so the world should move fast to send Tehran to the U.N. Security Council.
Five permanent members and Germany both are holding talks in London on Monday to chalk out a common strategy how Iran's problem could be sorted out.
Dr. Raj Baldev, President National Integration Assembly (NIA), a world peace mission body, has also appealed to Iran authorities that it should adopt such a course acceptable to all members of the United Nations rather than to stick to the one which can also go against the intrest of Iran in particular.
"This confrontration may also lead to an inordinate delay to the pipeline project being finalized among the three countries, Iran, Pakistan and India. It can even be cancelled at some stage, if such a situation prevails. In this case, it shall be injurious to all the three countries in general and Iran in particular," Dr. Raj Baldev, who is also Cosmo Theorist from India, said in the meeting of the NIA held in New Delhi on Monday.
As per Reuters from Monrovla, the United States wanted the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to hold an emergency meeting as soon as possible, fearing if IAEA members waited until a scheduled meeting in March this would give Iran a chance to further "obfuscate" over any nuclear weapons plans.
"We just can't let them do that," she told reporters traveling with her to Liberia for the inauguration of Africa's first woman president.
Tehran has, however, denied the charges leveled by the Western countries and clarified that it is just trying to build nuclear weapons under cover of an atomic power program to generate electricity.
Dr.Rice confirmed that she had "very good" conversations with many IAEA foreign ministers over the weekend and she was optimistic of their support in referring Iran to the Security Council where it could ultimately face sanctions.
"We have got to finally demonstrate to Iran that it can't with impunity just cast aside the just demands of the international community," Rice told reporters, without specifying which ministers she had spoken to or which countries backed an immediate referral.
"There is some work to do because you would like there to be a strong consensus for a vote. But whatever the numbers of the vote, I don't think there is any doubt that people are quite clear that Iran has crossed the threshold," she added.
