ICC Champions Trophy: Symonds, Martyn lead Australia to Semi-Final
MIL, Sep 16, 2004. Sports Correspondent
Undefeated partnership of Andrew Symonds (71*) and Martyn (60*) leads Australia to Semi Final of ICC Champions Trophy beating New Zealand by seven wickets with 12 overs to spare.
Australia stormed into the semi-finals with a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over New Zealand at The Oval. Glenn McGrath and Michael Kasprowicz picked up three wickets each as New Zealand set a disappointing 198 for 9 after losing the toss. Later the day, Andrew Symonds led the way to victor with an unbeaten 71 from only 47 balls, with four sixes.
As Australia began their reply, Jacob Oram struck in his first over to give New Zealand some hope of defending their small total. After playing one glorious straight drive, Adam Gilchrist shouldered arms to a ball that moved back in and clipped off stump (4 for 1). Despite the loss of early wickets, the runs were flowing for Australia, and by the end of 15 overs they had reached 65 for 2. Matthew Hayden survived a tricky spell from New Zealand's openers, and was leading the batting with an aggressive unbeaten 39.
