Dravid, Chappell were against Ganguly to be in Team India
MI/Agencies, Dec 30, 2005.
Lahore -:New belief from Pakistan affirms that Rahul Dravid and Greg Chappell didn't like Sourav Ganguly to be included in the Indian team, still all that happened. They are of the opinion that it shall lower the team spirit.
As per UNI, they say, it is clearly amused by the high drama regarding former skipper Sourav Ganguly's inclusion in the Indian team, Pakistan believes Rahul Dravid's side is low on team spirit and that's going to suit the hosts' purpose in the series starting next month.
According to a survey conducted by 'The News', former and present Pakistani cricketers believe Team India is now low on spirit and Ganguly would be in an awkward position during the tour of Pakistan.
"It is no secret that neither the Indian captain Rahul Dravid nor their coach Greg Chappell wanted him in the team. Then he has been preferred over someone like Mohammad Kaif who has been doing well for them recently. It's obvious that his presence in the dressing room will not be the best thing for their team spirit in Pakistan," a "well-known former Test player" was quoted as saying.
Former Test captain Mushtaq Mohammad also seemed apprehensive about the team spirit in Dravid's side.
"I don't know, but it appears as they've problems there over his selection. And I think Ganguly himself will be under a lot of pressure to perform now, given the circumstances in which he has been selected for the Pakistan tour," he said.
"It'll be interesting to see where they bat him in the Tests given that Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Dravid, VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh have all scored runs while they've also included two other openers in Gautam Gambhir and Wasim Jaffer," he said.
Another former Test player Rashid khan also echoed his view and said, "I don't know, but all the signs are there that the Indian team which tours Pakistan this year and the one that came last year and won in Pakistan are going to be two different outfits."
The daily also quoted another cricketer "still in the running" saying Ganguly would find it difficult to play the new role after being stripped off his captaincy.
"How he is going to adjust now to the changed circumstances where he knows that the captain and coach are not in his favour will be interesting to see. But this tension will only benefit Pakistan team which is now a united outfit under Inzamam-ul Haq," he said.
