Ahmedabad - Sri Lanka were dismissed for 206, conceding a first innings lead of 192. India started its 2nd inning and reached 287 for nine, the big credit goes to Yuvraj Singh who made brilliant 75.
India's leading batsmen collapsed including Tandulkar, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag. However Gautam Gambhir scored 30. Kaif could also score only nine.
Yuvraj Singh took the command in his hand and made 75, it was an aggressive bating and liked by the spectators, even though the stadium was not full. Mahendra Dhoni joined Yuvraj Singh and it was felt that the pair would raise the total to a respectable level but unfortunately Dhoni was out for 14, given by the Empire lbw. Irfan Pathan joined Yuvraj and made very impressive 27.
Anil Kumble and Harbhajan scored 23 and 19 respectively. They were at the crease and had put on an unbeaten 40 with some free hitting against Sri Lanka's attack.
Harbhajan, playing in his 50th test, took the wickets of Farveez Maharoof, Tillekaratne Dilshan and Lasith Malinga in the morning session to finish with seven for 62 as per Reuters.
It adds: India off spinner Harbhajan Singh claimed his 17th five-wicket test haul on Tuesday to help put India in a winning position at close of play on the third day of the final test against Sri Lanka.
Resuming on 131-5, the visitors managed to save the follow-on, with middle-order batsman Dilshan making 65 for his fifth test half-century. Kumble, playing his 100th test, struck early when he bowled left-hander Jehan Mubarak with a leg-break for 13.
Eleven runs later, Harbhajan caught and bowled Maharoof to leave Sri Lanka at 155 for seven. Dilshan and Malinga Bandara (28 not out) put on a 43-run stand for the eighth wicket until Dilshan was caught at short leg by Mohammad Kaif.
Yuvraj helped stage a remarkable recovery in India's second innings after they were reduced to 34 for three. The burly left-hander, who offered two difficult chances, added 140 runs in the company of opener Gautam Gambhir (30), Kaif (nine), Mahendra Dhoni (14) and Irfan Pathan (27).
Yuvraj was eventually caught behind while trying to cut leg spinner Bandara. It was his third test fifty and included 13 fours and a six. Ajit Agarkar, however opened fire against Sri Lanka and made 48, lashing six fours and a six. Unfortunately he missed the half-century.
