Sri Lanka 131 for 5, India on stronger spot with 398

Ahmedabad - On Sunday, India was in trouble after the top and middle order struggled and lost early wickets after India won the toss and elected to bat. On Monday, after being put to the sword by VVS Laxman and Irfan Pathan made a ton and a fifty respectively.
MS Dhoni was the only notable contributor who returned just short of his half century with 49 runs. Opener Gautam Gambhir was caught by Test debutant Upul Tharanga off the bowling of Lasith Malinga for 19.
Gambhir failed for the three successive times, he lasted for 40 minutes in which he faced 33 balls and struck three fours, including an edge to third man. Malinga bowled Virender Sehwag. Capta Dravid did not play because of gastroenteritis and so Virender Sehwag led the Indian team being the leading man after Dravid.
Muttiah Muralitharan got Tendulkar caught by Jehan Mubarak for 23. Yuvraj Singh was Murali's next victim, caught by Thilan Samaraweera for a duck. Mohammad Kaif was caught by skipper Marvan Atapattu off Malinga Bandara for 4.
A late strike by Harbhajan Singh in the post-tea session restricted Sri Lanka to 131 for 5 at the end of the second day's play of the third Test here.
The visitors now trail by 267 runs to India's first innings score of 398 - powered by VVS Laxman (104) and Irfan Pathan (82).
The duo put up a 125-run partnership to put up a competitive total even though the Indian top and middle order collapsed on the opening day of the match.
Replying to India's first innings score, Sri Lanka lost their opener Upal Tharanga in the third over of the innings with Pathan getting the early breakthrough.
India stands better chances in this match.
