India wins 2nd test beating Sri Lanka by 188 runs
MIL, Dec 14, 2005. Sasi Sukumaran
India won the second test by 188 runs defeating Sri Lanka at the Ferozshah Kotla in Delhi on Wednesday. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 247 and that gave an easy victory to India having a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Kumble got four wickets in the second innings giving him a total figure of 10 for 157, it was the eighth time that he captured a ten-wicket haul in the Tests. He was selected as Man of the Match, which he deserved.
So far Harbhajan Singh is concerned, he played a very well supporting role, claiming 3 for 70 in the second innings. However Ajit Agarkar got 2 for 45.
The sad news for the Ganguly fans is that he is dropped for the third and final Test against Sri Lanka to be played in Ahmedabad.
Ganguly's score of 40 and 39 in the win in Delhi has probably not influenced the selectors and he has been left out of the 15-man squad for the final game.
Chairman of selectors Kiran More said the omission did not signal the end of Ganguly's international career. He probably meant that Ganguly has been dropped temporarily only for the third test or as may be considered by the selectors.
He added, "It's too early to say but the doors are definitely not closed for him." "Wasim Jaffer has been recalled, while fellow opening batsman Virender Sehwag is back after a throat infection".
"We have been wanting to give other middle-order batsmen like Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif more chances and Ganguly can't be in the reserves," he explained.
He concluded that our middle order is very strong. We have some concerns only with the opening slot.
Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid has been retained as captain for the series against Pakistan and England in March.
India squad: Rahul Dravid (capt), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Wasim Jaffer, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Irfan Pathan, Mahendra Dhoni (wkt), Ajit Agarkar, Rudra Pratap Singh, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Murali Kartik.
