Human can live by 30 years more than normal?
MIL/Agencies, Aug 27, 2005.

It is a great news for the people, particularly the middle class and elderly category, since a newly discovered virus that infects chalk-covered marine algae contains compounds gives longevity to the growing age.

It has been tested on a mice and it has prolonged its age by 33%.  Time is not very far when the same technology shall apply to the human being in prolonging their age by one third.

The researchers at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory and colleagues at the Sanger Institute in Cambridge made this new discovery. They have found a new genetic code of the largest algal virus for the first time and that they claim success on a mice experiment.

According to Roger Highfield, Science Editor, Dr Willie Wilson and his team claims in the journal Science that they have unearthed a cluster of genes responsible for making ceramide, which is a key component of anti-wrinkle and anti-ageing creams.

This is such a gene that has never been found in a virus before; they are generally seen in animal and plant cells.

According to Dr. Willie Wilson, the ceramide can control a "death mechanism" that prolongs the life of a cell and then kills it at will. It is the same mechanism that causes a tadpole's tail to disappear as it develops into a frog.

Dr Wilson further explained: "For an invading virus, the ability to control when your host will die and ensure your own survival is quite incredible.

Essentially the virus hijacks the cell and slows down the ageing process by keeping it healthy for as long as possible. It uses the cell as a kind of factory to replicate itself and eventually takes over completely, killing off the cell."

The discovery of viral ceramide will be of great interest to scientists and industries looking for new sources of novel compounds for use in medicines and cosmetics and also for the ageing people.

Dr Wilson added: "This virus really is a giant. Most viruses only have a few genes - HIV, for example, has only nine - while this algal virus has 472 genes. We've only just scratched the surface - much more work is needed to understand what function most of the genes actually perform."
