India shows little interest in AIDS therapy?
MIL/Agencies, Jul 1, 2005. Special Correspondent
New York – According to an interim WHO-UNAIDS report on global across to HIV Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) India is second to South Africa in terms of the number of people who do not have access to AIDS treatment.
As per their figure, about 7.35 lakh HIV effected people are not given AIDS therapy to which the World AIDS Prevention Program of National Integration Assembly (NIA) disagrees.
Dr. Raj Baldev, NIA President, said in a message to WHO-UNAIDS, "ART is recommended for the people suffering from this deadly disease, but India’s involvement is negligible. Firstly, the figure of the HIV effected people is neither correctly surveyed nor furnished for the providing relief to them.
"Though most of the people in almost all Indian States are HIV effected, the HIV therapy is provided only in 6 States that too marginally, just for name sake. These states are Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Predesh and Delhi.
"Though HIV Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) was started in eight hospitals in India and was to be extended to 25 hospitals much before, there is no sign of such extensions appearing as such. In Delhi, ART was started at L.N.J.P Hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
"I am pleased to note that some teachers organizations are serious in tackling this problem in educating the people and urging the authorities to provide treatment to more HIV effected people in the country.
"This is such a fell disease for which the Indian Govt. should not neglect. This negligence shall not only let down the Indian Govt. in the eyes of the people but also in the international estimate, " Dr. Raj Baldev said.
