HIV infections may grow 20 times more in 2015-NIA
MIL/Agencies, Jun 4, 2005. Special Correspondent

New York - The United Nations has boldly confessed that only 12% victims get treatment since drugs are costly and preventive programs are ineffective. NIA President Dr. Raj Baldev reacted, "If the trend is not checked at this stage, the death rate shall increase by 20 fold in 2015, killing millions of more people and infecting 20 times more".

There may be tall claims by many countries that they are taking proper prevention to control the AIDS pandemic and India recently claimed in their official figures released by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) that the strength of AIDS affected people was reduced by 95% in the last year.

Different NGOs showed their reactions on the bogus figures released by NACO claiming that 28,000 new cases of HIV infections were reported in 2004 with 520,000 in 2003.  What a big joke!

NIA assailed the Indian Govt. on 30th May 2005 for giving wrong figures of AIDS affected people.

The UN says that the AIDS pandemic is outpacing many countries' efforts at prevention, and apprehend that the goal of containing the disease by 2015 may now be unrealistic.

NIA President Dr. Raj Baldev reacted and said, "though some countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia and Uganda should take serious steps to tackle the problem which is growing faster than their means of prevention.

"About £4.4bn are scheduled to be spent this year to combat the disease, which is considered meager as compared to the funds made available. The funds are either not reaching the proper agencies or these are not spent on the welfare and treatment of the HIV effected people. The UN and other funding agencies should ensure that the funds thus allocated are spent on the right cause".

"If the trend is not checked at this stage, the death rate shall increase by 20 fold in 2015, killing millions of more people and infecting 20 times more".

Mrs. Tripta Bhatia NIA Vice President said, "The message of preventive measures should be communicated on TVs and other communication channels to reach the workers in factories and offices.  It is more important to impart education to the people for their safety and prevention, since its spreading speed needs to be stopped on top priority basis. This is the only way to keep pace to control the disease in view of its growing speed of HIV infections".

Nitin Raj, NIA representative from London gave his reaction to NIA that the United Nations should bank more on the NGOs like NIA (National Integration Assembly) based in New Delhi, who are really dedicated to help the AIDS patients and control the fast spreading disease.

Shashi Sukumaran NIA Secretary said,  "There is more need to educate the people how to safeguard them from this deadly disease and to expand this message in print and electronic media to reach all levels of children in schools, colleges and training institutes".

As per agency report, a day-long conference noted some progress, including signs of success in Africa and a big increase worldwide in the number of people receiving AIDS counseling and testing. But efforts to control AIDS were failing in regions including eastern Europe and central America, said Peter Piot, the head of the UN campaign to combat AIDS.

"What we are faced with is multiple epidemics," Mr Piot said. "We are still moving into the globalization of the Aids epidemic."

A few hours before Mr Piot spoke, Kofi Annan, the secretary general, noted that just 12% of the people who need anti retroviral therapies in poorer countries were getting them.
