New Delhi, India: October9, 2009 – IR Summary/WHO – The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed its confidence in the H1N1 flu vaccine calling it the most important tool against the Influenza pandemic.
Mild unfavorable side effects such as muscle cramps or headache are to be expected in some cases, but everyone who has access to the vaccine should be immunized, said WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl. Only four out of 39,000 people vaccinated against H1N1 in China have had side effects such as muscle cramps and headache.
Mass vaccination campaigns against swine flu are going on in China and Australia and will be starting soon in the United States and other parts of Europe.
WHO emphasized on the importance of health care workers to be vaccinated, as it protects them as well as patients against the pandemic H1N1 strain.
WHO declared the H1N1 influenza pandemic in June and its collaborating laboratories have granted seed virus to vaccine makers worldwide to develop vaccines.
GlaxoSmithKline won government orders for its H1N1 vaccine of 440 million doses worth some $3.5 billion. Other companies manufacturing the flu vaccine include Sanofi-Aventis, Novartis, Baxter, AstraZeneca and CSL.
