Has Obama got a Rainbow Five plan?

MIL/Mohan Balaji, Jun 30, 2009

June 30, 2009 - The United States’ President Barack Obama has completed 5 months in office. However, there is no change in the economic situation in U.S or there is no end in hindsight for the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. With situation getting bad to worse from Iran, Pakistan and North Korea, the U.S administration is under sever pressure to CHANGE the whole scenario. The U.S supremacy is threatened by the emergence of India and China as emerging economies.

But the question is how will U.S bail itself out of the deep trench in which it is placed? it is here that history gives us a glimpse of the reason why U.S is still the last best hope in the world. From 1929 -41, U.S was still in the grip of the Great Depression. To bail itself out then, the Democratic administration under President Franklin D Roosvelt worked on a plan called Rainbow Five.

Rainbow Five is a hypothetical war plan which was leaked to the Chicago Tribune on December 4, 1941, four days ahead of the attack on the U.S naval station in Hawaii by the Japanese aircrafts, Chicago Tribune did a story titled F.D.R’s War Plans. The basic plan of attack was to invade Germany and Italy in mid-1943 and with the involvement of 5000000 American soldiers. The plan also included attacks on the Imperial Japan on the Pacific Theatre. The plan would actually bail U.S out of the Great Depression with a wartime economy.

However, the plan if implemented then would have been criticized by the anti-war American public and would not been ratified by the Congress and the Senate. So this plan needs an approval and this happened because of divine will in the disguise of attack of Pearl Harbour by the Japanese Aircrafts on December 9, 1941. The attack changed the world’s history forever with U.S army invading Europe first and then cleared the Japanese military regime with bombings on Hiroshima and Nagashaki. However, there is a spin to this whole story, in a book written by Robert Stinnett's Day of Deceit, it is mentioned that FDR provoked the Japanese to attack the U.S naval base in Hawaii. This was one to distract public attention from his abject failure to end the Great Depression.

There is a great saying “History repeats itself,” U.S position in today’s geo-politics is same. With economy not recovering after the crash of Lehman Brother’s stock in New York stock exchange on September 15th 2008, and countries such as Iran, North Korea defying and challenging U.S while regional blocks such as BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and SCO ( Shangai Co operation Organization ) challenging U.S supremacy in the world politics  U.S might get into a major war to reassert itself in the International Politics.

There is every chance that U.S after the nuclear tests conducted by North Korea and increased violence in Iran might provoke any of these countries to attack any of the U.S bases and then will get a public mood in favor of war. The U.S Congress and the senate might also support any such move if at all U.S’ base is attacked.

From what we know of Obama so far who resembles FDR’s cool and stress free demeanor there is every chance it might happen.

So the bigger lesson on needs to learn is that “Never count the Yankees out,” and let us not forgot what the Late England Prime Minister Winston Churchill said that Americans will do the right thing after trying every other option.
