New Delhi, India: 28 June 2009 – Sofia Raj:
New York is based on the myth of 9/11, the story linked to a terrorist attack in New York, a thrilling movie likely to attract cine goers and they may like to enjoy.
New York is very well directed by Kabir Khan even though the plot of the story of terrorists and the US investigating agencies, FBI, given to him for direction lacked technical maturity at certain stages of the movie. So far his direction is concerned, he handled it remarkably.
The technical discrepancies in the story and certain scenes depicted therein did not seem to have given the director a free hand. A director has to manage the scene within as given to him, whatsoever may be the case, he gave the best of it.
It has a big cast of John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan, and that aspect would be well received by the cine goers being a long awaited movie. Overall the picture is worth seeing, whatsoever the message the producer wants to convey. These main four stars really justified their roles, one best over the other; outstanding within the spheres of their roles, even though it was the first time for Neil to go abroad for shooting, he did well and impressed the audience.
Katrina (Maya in the movie) has performed excellently, her serious touches in the films have really raised her to a No. 1 star, for instance when she received John after release from the interrogation jail and asked for marrying her and when she challenged Neil with a revolver and many more scenes attracted the audience and they got the privilege of her mature acting that shall impress audience the most.
The main four stars, in short, performed their roles so well that it is really difficult to say who did lesser justice to his or her role.
Coming to the story of the movie, it has some similarities to Khuda Kay Liya.
In this review, I shall only briefly discuss New York. It is a story of friendship of two, both of them were mistaken as terrorists, John as Sam shown being dragged away in doubt and tortured, shamelessly lowest class torturing tactics shown in the interrogation cells, as deployed nakedly to show the audience; the director should have used his skill not to create extreme hatred against the purported methods of FBI, US Investigating agency.
Neil (Omar) was interrogated by Arrfan, FBI Agent, who advised him to become approver of the FBI to help them to get Sam (Abraham), his old friend, arrested for his terrorists activities. Neil did not believe whether Sam could do such a dirty act but the things proved true. Sam had become a terrorist after his release from the jail where he was continuously tortured for three years.
The plot shows that the authorities could find no evidence from the innocent people who were taken for interrogations and were inhumanly tortured. After the release of a small group from the jail after 3 years, made them to live a compelling life to take revenge from the US Investigating Agency, FBI, who robbed them of three years of their life and put them to such an inhuman state of torture that they had no other option but to become a terrorist outfit and take revenge from the American Investigating Agency, and Abraham (Sam) had become the leader of that particular group.
Better see the movie and you will find that the movie on the whole as very good except that it shall hit you like a tone of bricks at several points in the narrative but you will still enjoy it, it is worth seeing. Grade and Stars: Grade is ‘A’, Three out of Five Stars.
Katrina after viewing the movie broke down, so much impressed by her role that she could not ever expect of her the excellent acting that she did in this film, perhaps, better than all her earlier movies.
