Indian Prime Minister declines to attend SAARC
MIL/Agencies, Feb 2, 2005. Special Correspondent
Dhaka - The meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), which was scheduled for February 6 in Dhaka, has been called off due to the political imbalance in Nepal.
The Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has declined to attend the meeting under such circumstances.
Though the Charter of SAARC expressly states that all member nations have to attend the meet compulsorily, Manmohan Singh said that the time was not proper for the meeting, as per the official, who said in anonymity. He advised to call off the meet.
Though there were earlier misgivings over India's attendance following the general strike called by the opposition in Bangladesh, the official reason given is the situation in member state Nepal, where Gyanendra dissolved the multi-party government led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and declared an emergency on Tuesday.
