Palestinian militants wish to declare cease-fire against Israel
MIL, Jan 23, 2005. Special Correspondent

Jerusalem - A Palestinian Militant group in Ghaza wants peace, they are ready to suspend attacks on Israeli people so far the talks go on between the new Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Mr. Sharon. They have expressed their desire for a long-term cease-fire. "However, their initial period of peace shall at least be for a month," they said.

They wish to have some role in the legislative elections in July. However, commenting on this Mr. Abbas said that he could say only that much that it was a good progress.
Mr. Abbas had long talk with Mr. Hamas, Islamic Jihar and the faction of Fatah's Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades. He said:

"We can say that there has been an important progress in the talks between both the countries. Our differences are more or less gone, and this is a good sign and a sure indication of a violable agreement." Mr. Abbas said.

He also said, "It is a good beginning for both parties." Ziad Abu Amr, A legislator from Gaza said," He is pleased to mediate the talks, strongly hope  the talks shall be fruitful because the "harmony and on the grounds" are such that they are likely to lead to a longer cease-fire in the interest of both." He further showed satisfaction that Israel is also willing to reciprocate the proposal.

The elections of legislatives are to be held in July and it is intended to show not only the comparative strength but also the real popularity of the militants in the electorate as they claim. If really they are so strong and enjoy a confidence of the people, which he thinks they may have, their coming forward is an encouraging sign of peace for both parties.

On the other side Sharon said, " We don't know whether this is now a genuine change in them. However, we hope so.'' But Israel would be ready to act to defend its citizens, even if it means a large-scale operation in Gaza in case the militants resume their attacks on Israelis."
