New Delhi, India: December 2, 2008, Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist - President elect Barak Obama has great many problems in store for him, one of the most difficult problems is that of the failing economy issue followed by the problem of Afghanistan for which he has already undertaken to send more American troops to break the fighting strength of Taliban and Afghanistan. The increase in number of American troops to meet the challenge of Afghanistan is already on the agenda of the Military experts.
There are number of other problems connected to Afghanistan like rural based insurgency and uprising revolt. After seven years of war, Afghanistan has presented a unique set of problems, the first being the weak govt., a rural-based rebellion, their easy escape rout to neighboring Pakistan, a flourishing narcotics trade, bad infrastructures, irregular land, and above all, they are ready to die while fighting, no fear, no horror in their eyes, rather spirit of killing American troops, or whosoever come in their way irrespective of their nationality.
If the data is compared, from August to October, this year, an average number of daily attacks by rebels have surpassed the figure of Iraq.
As per assumed record, it is for the first time that the violence in Afghanistan erupted so seriously after May 2003, most of the rebels started directly attacking the foreign troops, particularly Americans, who they hate to the last. If the words of David J.Kilcullen, ex officer in the Australian Army and former senior adviser to Secretary of State, are taken serious, the violence in Iraq has reduced to the level of 2004 while the violence in Afghanistan has gone up comparatively higher, around 265 allied military died from June to November.
To save the prestige of the country and to save his own image, President elect Barak Obama had hinted during his campaigning of sending at least two combat brigades to Afghanistan to meet the challenge of growing confrontations of Afghanistan on his being elected to White House.
Now when Obama has to take charge as President, his strategy shall naturally reckon in the area of breaking the moral of Afghan fighters.
As per New York Times, Pentagon is already planning to send more than 20,000 additional troops in response to a request from Gen. David D. McKiernan, the top commander in Afghanistan. They may include four combat brigades, an aviation brigade equipped with attack and troop-carrying helicopters, reconnaissance units, support troops and trainers for the Afghan Army and the police.
The first of the combat brigades is to deploy in the eastern part of Afghanistan, while the rest of the brigades are expected to be sent to southern and southwestern Afghanistan. All told, it would increase the number of American troops in Afghanistan to about 58,000 from the current level of 34,000, and add to the approximately 30,000 other foreign troops who are operating there under a NATO-led command.
The Pentagon schedule for sending the troops bears little resemblance to the 2007 buildup in Iraq. Pentagon officials said it would take 12 to 18 months to deploy the reinforcements. (In contrast, more than five brigades were sent to Iraq for the surge within five months.)
Poor roads and limited military infrastructure in Afghanistan, however, complicate the task of deploying the troops.
