ESPN-Star Sports moves to Bombay High Court against ZEE and BCCI
MIL, Sep 6, 2004. Special Reporter
New Delhi – Rik Dovey, MD, ESPN-Star Sports said in a statement here that they had no other option but to move to Bombay High Court to seek reverse award which the BCCI had given to Zee Network to telecast all matches to be played in India for the next four years.
"This unfortunate decision and we are left with no fault of ours and hence the only alternative left with us is to resort to the law in an attempt to bring fair-dealing and justice to the process," Dovey said.
"We are very clear that ESPN-STAR Sports was the highest eligible bidder under the rules of bidding specified by the BCCI. The BCCI has now changed the entire process of bidding in violation of rules set by BCCI themselves just to favor our competitor by giving them an excessive advantage,” he said.
R.C.Venkalesh, MD, ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd also alleged that the BCCI changed the bidding rules abruptly and unjustly to favor Zee Network: He said:
"Zee should not have been allowed to bid in the first place since it does not qualify because it has no prior experience of broadcasting or producing live international cricket event as specified in the tender."
