Gujjars’ Issue: Govt. rejects venue for talks
MIL/Agencies/PTI Input, Jun 7, 2008. IR Summary

New Delhi, India: June 7, 2008 – IR Summary - In response to Agitating Rajasthan Gurjar Arakshan Sangarsh Samiti , who showed their readiness to talk to the Govt., which it acknowledged to have been received,  has now rejected their demand to hold talks at Bayana, the govt. wants to negotiate in Jaipur.

But Rajasthan Gurjar Arakshan Sangarsh Samiti wants to hold talks at Bayana and not in Jaipur, particularly Gujjar leader Colonel Kirori Singh Bainsla is not prepared to send the delegation to Jaipur.

Col. Bainsla, however, toughened the stand and said that he won't be going to Jaipur.
"If the talks are to be held, they will be held in Bayana," Col. Bainsla said.

On Saturday morning, Col Bainsla had written a letter to the Rajasthan government showing their readiness to hold talks on behalf of Gujjars, but did not hint about the number of delegation or the place where the talks could possibly be held.

But the letter did not mention who and how many people would represent the community that has been agitating for Scheduled Tribe status.

The deadlock was broken after Col Bainsla accepted a formal government offer for dialogue.

"Talks will take place in Bayana. Gurjar representatives will be decided once we receive a communication from the government about our decision. We have only one demand that the state government should send a recommendation granting ST status to Gurjars," Bainsla was quoted as saying by PTI.
