Press Association condemns police action
MIL/Business Standard, Jun 4, 2008.
New Delhi: June 4, 2008 - Press Association, the body representing government accredited correspondents, today condemned the Gujarat Police action of filing complaints of sedition against three staffers of The Times of India (TOI). Association President Jaishankar Gupta said that the police action was a move to gag the press. "This is nothing but attack on the freedom of the press which will not be tolerated in a democracy," he said.
There are ways and means to deal with any matter concerning incorrect or wrong reporting and one could seek redressal with bodies like Press Council of India, Gupta said.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner O P Mathur had filed three complaints pressing charges of sedition and criminal conspiracy against TOI's Ahmedabad edition Resident Editor Bharat Desai, Correspondent Prashant Dayal and a photographer for printing a series of articles linking him with a mafia don.
