May 21, 2008 - The 30-share index, BSE Sensex extending yesterday fall, opened with a negative gap of around 164 points following global cues. Sensex opened at 17,065.61 against the yesterday`s close of 17,230.18.
Asian markets declined in the initial session of trade on Wednesday (May. 21), on concern that rising credit market losses will reduce banks earning and declining growth in demand from China will affect raw-materials producers.
The Sensex is currently trading at 17,123.10, down 107.08 points, or 0.62%; while NSE Nifty is trading at 5,073.60, down 31.35 points or 0.61% (10.23 a.m.).
The market breadth is negative. Out of the total 1739 stocks traded at the BSE, 722 advanced, 966 declined while 51 remained unchanged.
Gainers at the BSE include Tata Steel, BHEL, TCS and M&M rose marginally.
Losers at the BSE include ICICI Bank, which fell 2.29% to Rs 906.40, DLF fell 2.16% to 622.80 and HDFC Bank pared 1.96%. Ambuja Cement, ONGC and Jaiprakash Associates also declined.
