MIL/Federation of God Believers, May 2, 2008. Swamy (Dr.) Raj Baldev
New Delhi, India: May 2, 2008 – Federation of God Believers took this story from the Autobiography of Vishnu Bhakt Swamy (Dr.) Raj Baldev from his memoirs ‘Tryst with God’ -- Series 7 and released for the benefit of general public who place faith in God and His greatness and love for His devotees.
Swamy Raj said:
“My father was staying alone in Montgomery, in undivided India, and our whole family was living in a village in Talagang Tehsil, Kamelpur District in undivided India, and now in Pakistan.
My father sold his entire estate of his village and decided to shift the family to Montgomery, circumstances were such, and there was no other option. He purchased a big house in Montgomery, the house had a separate spacious Guest House at its back portion on the rear lane.
It was important for the family permanently to shift to Montgomery from a security point of view and over and above Montgomery was a modern city with all facilities, particularly for children’s schooling, health and sports.
It was the British rule in India, and every body felt safe particularly in cities, not like these days.”
Swamy Raj continued:
“During my stay in that city, my mother got an attack of severe rheumatism with symptoms of crippling, to be more specific, the disease was similar to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) of which Stephen William Hawking, a British theoretical Physicist, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics of the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Cornville and Caius College, Cambridge. He is famous for his exceptional contribution in the field of Cosmology, Quantum Gravity and Black Hole.
One doctor told me that my mother was disabled by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a type of motor neurone disease. This disease is commonly known in United States as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
My mother, in fact, contracted pneumonia during her delivery of my youngest daughter, exactly some symptoms leading to ALS. In this disease, Stephen Hawking gradually lost the use of his arms, legs, and voice, and is now almost completely paralysed but my mother was half paralysed, she overcame other symptoms, perhaps due to her strong spiritualism. In short my mother’s disease was incurable. When in the most advanced era of science, doctors have failed to cure a personality like Stephen Hawking, what could be the fate of my mother, a matter of great concern?
This group of diseases is progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurones, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing.
In fact, the disease of which my mother suffering from was a mixture of MND and Rheumatism, her lower portion of body had stopped functioning, but she had no problem in her speech and intellectual wisdom due to her Godly thoughts and devotion.
Since my mother could not move from the bed, she required a regular attendant for 24 hrs. to take care of her and our family members were happily ready to serve her on the bed.
My sister Maina Wanti, who was older than my brother and me used to attend my mother whole the day and night. Only for a brief period, we two brothers rendered some help to our mother after coming from the school. My sister had lot of responsibilities. She was also to take care of our youngest sister, who was quite small and after her birth, my mother had an attack of the above said deadly disease.
My mother remained in this state for more than 7 years; my father took her to all available best hospitals for treatment and consulted the top most doctors to find out some hope of curing her, but of no avail. Even the best doctors in Lahore whom my father approached showed their red signal.
During this long period of illness, my father had to incur lot of expenditure on her treatment; his personal income from the court considerably declined due to his irregular availability in the court and his clients were reduced to minimal since my father had little time to attend to them. They used to come from far off places for legal consultation and opinion about their criminal cases.
My father was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, the Supreme Godhead in Hindu mythology. He used to serve all sadhus and saints with whatever best he could contribute with his philanthropic nature and, in fact, he discharged his financial sacred obligations happily to help others irrespective of considering his means. He simply wanted his wife to be cured, who was also a great devotee of Lord Krishna and used to read the Holy Gita on the bed itself.
One day my father had a dream, wherein he met a Saintly person in yellow clothes, who advised him that he should get his elder daughter married and his wife should jointly do the kanya Daan, (ceremony of giving daughter in marriage) along with him and that should be done as fast as possible. The Saintly person had given logic that by doing so all the sins of the family would be washed off and good results could prevail.
To the sudden surprise of my father, an unknown person came to him the next day, introduced him having belonged to Okara Tehsil of the same district i.e. Montgomery. He suggested to my father that if he was willing, he could think of marrying his daughter with his nephew, living and doing business in Peshawar, North Western Frontier Province.
My father conferred with my mother and both agreed to the proposal; the boy was called from Peshawar and just in ten days, the marriage was solemnized.
My mother and father jointly performed all marriage ceremonies as he was advised to do so in his dream. Even though my mother could not get up from the bed, a special arrangement was made for my mother to sit on a comfortable chair to enable her to do the sacred formalities while sitting on the bed.
My elder sister’s marriage was properly solemnized under the Hindu rites all were happy and the atmosphere was cordial. After marriage, the only flaw erupted was that my brother-in-law was unable to take my sister along with him to his home town Peshawar.
He was to go to Karachi urgently to dispose of his ancestral property and he, therefore, took my sister to his uncle’s house to Okara just for two days as the basic religious formality demanded and left her at our home and went to Karachi to to dispose of his ancestral property. My brother-in-law, however, promised to take his wife to Peshawar after completing the deal in Karachi. So my sister stayed in our house as usual and at home we did not realize that she was married."
