India 2-0 series win against Bangladesh

MIL/Agencies, Dec 19, 2004

Chittagong - Irfan Pathan overwhelmed Bangladesh with a five-wicket haul to bring India to within one wicket of winning the second Test - and wrapping up the series 2-0 - on the third day of the match at M.A. Aziz stadium here on Sunday.

In the second innings Pathan, who is increasingly becoming lethal especially with his first spells, began the demolition job from the very first ball and halted only after wiping out the top half. On Sunday, the Bangladesh innings could be divided into two parts: the hosts' fight back led by Ashraful's defiant century and the inexplicable surrender in the latter part of the day.

But Ashraful had one more meaningful partnership left as he and wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud (22) put on 60 for the seventh wicket. This was the last show of defiance by the Bangladeshi batsmen.

Ashraful, who holds the record for the youngest batsman to score a century in Test cricket, remained unconquered. Of the next four wickets lower down the order, Kumble took two and Harbhajan and Tendulkar one each to push Bangladesh to the brink.

With nine wickets down by the close of play, the umpires extended play by one over. But when Tendulkar started sending full tosses and long hops in the hope of forcing Talha Jubair to mistime a shot, the umpires called off the day's play.
