Is the hefty salary hike for government employees justified?

March 24, 2008- The Sixth Pay Commission, on Monday, submitted its report to the government, reportedly recommending a 40 per cent hike in salary for the Central Government employees.
The recommendations of the commission, if accepted, would provide a bonanza to over four million Central Government employees.
Government employees feel that this hike was long due. The salaries of private companies have always been on the higher side compared to their public counterparts. This hike may somewhat bridge the gap between the two.
However, when it comes to work, public sectors are often found lagging behind and more is desired from the government employees. But opinions differ.
