Sarabjit's wife pins hope on Indian govt

MIL/NDTV, Mar 20, 2008

Amritsar: March 20, 2008 - Sukhpreet Kaur, wife of the Indian prisoner on death row Sarabjit Singh, on Wednesday night said it was for the Indian government to work out the modalities with the Pakistan government on how to get freedom for her husband.

''My family and I are happy that the Pakistan government has deferred the hanging of Sarabjit Singh by a month. It is now for the Indian government to see how best it can get Sarabjit back in India,'' said Sukkhpreet.

She also clarified her earlier statement that her husband's freedom should not be in exchange for release of any terrorist from Indian jail.

She said she was emotionally over-whelmed when she made the earlier statement.

Sukhpreet had requested the Indian government not to exchange Sarabjit Singh's freedom for terrorists.

Pakistan has indicated that it wants India to release some Pakistani nationals being held in Indian jails.

To this Sukhpreet said, ''I and my daughters would never like that Sarabjit should be freed if any hardcore Pakistani terrorists lodged in Indian jails are released in exchange. Nothing is above the nation and we can't go against the interests of our motherland.'' (With PTI inputs)
