BJP and Left storm in Parliament on Kannur Issue

Kannur, Kerala, India: March 13, 2008 - IR Summary - The Left Party and the BJP has created a big issue in Parliament on the violence in Kannur in Kerala. The violence has also robed this area of the normal trade and this region is paying a heavy economic cost.
The residents of Kannur have not only to deal with the recurring politcal clashes, but also by paying a high economic penalty.
The politicians are only after their political gains, they talk of the violence and not the economic losses to the area. The adverse effect is that traders do not like to risk their investment in this area due to violence and strikes and this shall ultimately affect the entire region.
Kannur is famous for Textiles, plywood and farm tools An airport, a port and a fashion institute are also coming up. All are adversely affected by the violence.
There are political strikes and each strike costs over 500 crore of rupees but politicians are not concerned with the losses, they are only concerned is how to get political capital out of such situations?

Ajit Kumar, a garment exporter, is worried about the mindless killings in Kannur. If this continues, Kannur's hand woven fabric, popular in the US and Europe, may lose its sheen.
''Due to the incidents that happened over the last 10 to 12 months, we have lost business and business accountability,'' said Ajit Kumar, Director, Parry Murray Company Ltd. ''In these circumstances if this kind of political violence happens, definitely the people who are coming forward to invest will think twice before investing here,'' said Balachandra Baliga, President, North Malabar Chamber of Commerce.
The North Malabar chamber of commerce has convened a meeting on March 15 to discuss the issue of politics of violence and its affect on the industry. They will also issue a joint appeal to the political parties to ensure peace and tranquility in trouble torn district.
