Kolkata,India: January 18, 2008 - A court has dismissed the applicant of Joydeep Mukherjee filed by him in February 2007 that 997 acres of farmlandm which was agricultural land situated at Singur, Hoogly District, about 40 km from Kolkata, was acquired by force by the govt. and illegally allotted to the manufacturers of Nano, the cheapest car.
The decision comes a week after Nano has come into news.
After Mr Mukherjee filed the complaint case, 10 other individuals and associations had so joined him against the Tata Group on the plea that the land had been acquired illegally. The court rejected all 11 petitions.
The Tata Group is planning to star selling the car in July 2008 even though the building of the Nano factory is still under way.
A Kolkata High Court bench, comprising Chief Justice SS Nijjar and Justice PC Ghosh, said they had found "no violation of the Land Acquisition Act or any other regulation" by the West Bengal government in acquiring the land.
They followed months of fierce protests by a section of local peasants led by opposition parties like the Trinamul Congress. The West Bengal government, in its defence, told the court it had not violated any legal provisions while acquiring land for the Tata plant, (Input from BBC).
