Bangalore,Karnataka, India: November 19, 2007 – MIL/IR Summary- There is hard luck to BJP, their govt. in Karnataka state is in trouble again. BJP stands narrow chance to win the confidence vote.
BJP’s coalition partner Janta Dal (S) is one of the most unworthy and undependable political alliance, they seem to have no honor for their word; they change every minute and if such a state of affair continues, the BJP govt. in Karnataka may fall.
The Janata Dal (S) here today has refused to back a confidence vote sought by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). They have determined to blackmail the BJP.
The Janata Dal (S), junior partner in the coalition government headed by the BJP, said it would not vote for the government later on Monday unless their fresh conditions are first met.
"A whip has been issued and all our legislators have taken a unanimous decision to vote against this government," Y.S.V. Datta, Janata Dal (S) spokesman, told reporters after a meeting of state party lawmakers.
"A national party thinks it can take a regional party for a ride. It is a question of self-respect for us," he said.
The Janata Dal (S) wants the BJP to sign a pact agreeing to its demands before the vote, BJP did not reject their offer, simply they said that they would consider their conditions later on, since BJP wants some time first to let the govt. win the confidence than wasting time on frivolous matters.
It is very crucial for BJP to keep their govt. in tact here so that they could create further ground in other parts of the Southern region.
However, BJP Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa is confident that he would win, since there is every possibility that some MLAs might violate the whip and vote for the BJP to avoid elections.
As per figures of the MLAs, the total seats are 225, the BJP has 79 and needs a total of 113 legislators to prove its majority. The Janata Dal (S) has 49, the Congress party 65, with the rest belonging to smaller parties or being independents.
As per confidential contacts by MLAs of Janata Dal (S), and independents, who have shown their readiness to support BJP secretly, the BJP stands 50-50 chance.
