Musharraf forms new Caretaker Govt. -Appoints Prime Minister

Islamabad, Pakistan:  November 16, 2007 – Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf appointed PML(Q) leader and Chairman Senate Mohammedmian Soomro as Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan and administered oath to him here today. 

Mr. Soomro, 67, a veteran banker, also a Musharraf loyalist is fully satisfied on being appointed as Caretaker Prime Minister and expressed  confidence that he would discharge his duties faithfully in the cause of the country even though the conditions in country demand extra care.

The main purpose of forming the new caretaker govt is to help conduct elections of new parliament assemblies in January 2008. The President also selected some federal Ministers who were sworn to form the part of the new govt.

“Pakistan has never seen such a smooth transition of government,” Musharraf said, adding, “I have introduced the essence of democracy, whether anyone believes it or not.”

According to constitutional experts after becoming caretaker, Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro can continue as the Chairman of the Senate. (IR Summary).

According to them, he is also eligible to secure 60 days leave and run the caretaker set-up till Emergency exists. Under the PCO (Provisional Constitutional Order) he is eligible to resume services once the duties as a caretaker has been accomplished.

Meanwhile Pakistani authorities have ended the house arrest of former premier Benazir Bhutto, rights activist Asma Jahangir and other women leaders, hours before the arrival of a US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte who is likely to press the President to lift Emergency and release political detainees.
