A study had claimed that the moon’s surface could hold the key for meeting the future energy demands which is getting exhausted and the earth’s fossil fuels drying up in the coming decades.
According to worldnet daily the report had said "Shortages of energy on planet Earth have some experts looking to space for answers, and the moon is being eyed as a potential source".
"When compared to the Earth, the moon has a tremendous amount of helium 3," Lawrence Taylor, a director of the U.S. Planetary Geosciences Institute, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, told Agence France-Presse.
Helium 3 is a variant of the gas used in lasers and refrigerators, as well as to blow up balloons, and it's deposited on the lunar surface by solar winds. If ever used on Earth, it would need to be extracted from moon soil and rocks by heating it above 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit.
A new lunar decade has begun," states a declaration crafted by the member nations who participated in a major lunar conference held in Udaipur, India. That gathering held November 22-26 involved some 200 scientists from 17 countries.
The International Conference on Exploration and Utilization of the Moon (ICEUM-6) was hosted by India’s Physical Research Laboratory and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Co-sponsors of the meeting were the International Lunar Exploration Working Group (ILEWG) and the European Space Agency, along with Canada’s Optech Incorporated and Space Age Publishing Company, based in Hawaii.
However nothing seems to have gone forward on the proposal. As usualy, despite the suggested highway between moon and earth and a science agenda that was created, this remains a distant dream. We shall follow up on the story and keep you posted.
