Army Courts give special powers to Musharraf to try civilians

MIL/Agencies, Nov 11, 2007

Islamabad, Pakistan: Army Courts have given special powers to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to try civilians on a wide range of charges. The move was initiated one week after the emergency was romulgated.

As per Pakistan Attorney General Malik Mohammad Qayyum, the emergency might be lifted in a month time.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is expected to plan to mount a pressure on General Musharraf to give up the post of Army Chief.

Bhutto seems to have revised her demand of lifting emergency by 15 November, which she had earlier announced, she now wants that President Musharraf should hold elections as scheduled in January, and lift the emergency rule.

Ms. Bhutto met with senior members of Pakistan People's Party yesterday and addressed a protest by hundreds of journalists in Islamabad.

Most of the independent broadcasting channels remained off the air in Pakistan and the news of some newspapers were censored.

Pakistani authorities also ordered three British journalists to leave the country after their newspaper, "The Daily Telegraph," had used objectionable language against General Musharraf.
