Istanbul: November 03m 2007 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice while on her visit to Turkey said that The United States was "deeply disturbed" that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf had imposed emergency in Pakistan.

Rice said that the step of emergency takes the democracy backward.” However, she hoped that normalcy shall prevail soon.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Pakistan's intention was to have free and fair elections. The measures taken now may take Pakistan away from democracy and civilian rule.

She said that we will be urging President Musharraf and other concerned parties to honor his commitment to hold free and fair elections. Rice added that she had not yet heard anything from President Parvez Musharraf. (IR Summary).

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in a statement that Musharraf had promised to hold elections in January and the United States urged him to do so.

"The United States is deeply disturbed by reports that Pakistani President Musharraf has taken extra-constitutional actions and has imposed a state of emergency," McCormack said.

Pakistan's internal security has deteriorated sharply in the past few months with a wave of suicide attacks by al Qaeda-inspired militants, including one last month that killed 139 people.”
