UAE to deport 4000 laborers for seeking better wages
MIL/Agencies, Nov 1, 2007. IR Summary
Dubai: November 01, 2007 - The Labour Ministry of UAE revealed to the Arabic newspaper Emarat Al-Youm that they have decided to deport four thousand Asian labourers working in Dubai for staging illegal strikes at the weekend over poor wages and working conditions, because this is an act of vandalism, not permitted in this country.
The Ministry officials said that if the labourers do not want to work, they are free to go elsewhere but shall not be forced to work on our conditions. Hence the Ministry has contacted the concerned bodies to help them make necessary arrangements for their deportation without any feeling of ill- will.
The United Arab Emirates are forced to take this harsh decision since on Saturday, thousands of laborers stopped working and reportedly occupied a building and defaced it before attacking police and stoned the vehicles.
Since strikes or formation of any labor union are not allowed in this country, the authorities took exception to their acts of strike and finally decided to deport the protestors. (IR Summary).
UAE News (Outpur from HT):
According to officials cited by local media, the protesters were demanding a wage rise of between 600 and 1,000 dirhams (140 and 270 dollars) a month, improved transport to construction sites and better housing.
Dubai, part of the UAE federation, has experienced a huge boom in its economy in recent years fuelled to a large degree by the growth of the construction sector, which employs hundreds of thousands of foreign workers across the Gulf state. Predominantly from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the labourers travel thousands of miles to work in the region so; that they could send some money to their families.
