Godhra Riots, 8 convicted for life, 29 acquitted

Ahmedabad: October 30, 2007 – IR Summary - In Eral massacre case, which took place on March 3, 2002, seven persons were killed as a result of Godhra riots , Additional Sessions Judge H M Dholakia Godhra sessions court has sentenced eight persons to life and awarded three years imprisonment to three accused and acquitted 29.
The attackers targeted villages, including Eral in the interior of Panchmahal district in Central Gujarat following the Godhra riots.
A main witness namely Madinabibi Sheikh had filed a complaint case with the Police, based on which the Police filed three chage sheets.
As a result, three of them were also convicted for having gang-raped two minor girls and other three were punished on charges of loot and violence. All these six accused were given three years Rigorous Imprisonment. Siraj Malik, Advocate of Madinabibi said that his client is planning to appeal against the acquittal of 29 accused in the High Court on the ground that there was sufficient evidence against them, which aspect looks to have been overlooked by the court and were acquitted.
