10 Indian policemen sentenced to life for fake killing
MIL/IR/Agencies, Oct 24, 2007. IR Summary

New Delhi: October 24, 2007 –IR Summary- When crime grows, it shows the judiciary is weak and when the criminals are suitably punished, the judiciary is appreciated. Wherever the Judiciary shows its iron rod, the criminals fall automatically in their own trap and that gives a signal to others to shun such over-smart activities.

An Indian has court sentenced 10 policemen today to life in prison for the deaths of two businessmen who were killed in a sleet of bullets in New Delhi more than a decade ago.

The officers, convicted last week, gave a theory that  they opened fire on the businessmen in self-defense after shots fired from inside their car wounded a policeman but Judge Vinod Kumar refused to accept the plea, since it was an after thought theory and did not match with other links of the case.

The Judge, therefore, rejected the plea of the Prosecutors and pronounced the punishment for life, which the people at large have appreciated and given boost of placing higher confidence in the Judiciary.

Prosecutors tried to persuade the Judge that police fired 38 shots at Pradeep Goel and Jagjit Singh as they drove through the Indian capital's posh shopping area of Connaught Place in March 1997, simply to show that it was a mistaken identity, but it did not work, the Judge was not convinced.

With this punishment, the police would think ten times before creating a fake encounter. The police carry a bad name for killing unarmed and innocent people by showing fake encounters just to get promotions and medals and also to take revenge, direct or conspired.

Though there was considerable delay in the process of case in the court, the late punishment is better than letting the criminals out.
