Tehran, Iran: October 16, 2007 - Russian President Vladimir Putin was discouraged by his own intelligence agency to cancel his trip to Iran since there was a threat to his life but disregarding the danger, he arrived in Iran on Tuesday to conduct talks on Iran’s nuclear program.
As regards threat to Putin’s life, the apprehension was not hollow, as claimed to be. Though authorities say that Putin brushed aside the threat to his life and decided to fly to Iran, the fact remains that Iran had taken a bold step and ensured that it would be able to suppress the threat and it successfully wiped off.
It was also reported by Russian news agency that some suicide bombers and kidnappers were hatching a plot to kill Putin, which Tehran managed to avert. However, the Iranian authorities treated the matter as Most Secret and declined to disclose it to the press.
This is Putin’s first visit after Joseph Stalin in 1943, he will meet Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has so far been fighting alone against the Western powers to stop its nuclear program. But with the visit of Putin, Ahmadinejad can feel that he is not alone in his mission to face Western music.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki welcomed Putin at the airport in Tehran, where he is scheduled to attend a summit of five Caspian Sea states aiming at bringing them closer to a deal by dividing the sea, its huge oil and gas resources.
As per Russian officials, Iran's nuclear program shall figure at the top of the Agenda for talk apart from other bilateral issues.
Russia has always been pleading in the UN and outside that Western powers should avoid taking any tough stand like sanction against Iran as regards its Nuclear Program. The different viewpoints clash between Russia and the Western powers, the later believe that Iran’s target is to make atom bombs while Iran refutes the charges and reiterate every time that they are developing nuclear program only for civilian purposes.
