Jagatsinghpur, Orissa: October 13. 2007 – IR Summary – Some villagers, backed by CPI, are opposed to setting up of 12 million tonne per annum capacity steel plant in Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district.
The CPI leaders look to have abetted them on Saturday and they took four employees of POSCO-India, the Indian arm of South Korean steelmaker POSCO, as hostages.
Sahu's organisation, which is funded by the Communist Party of India (CPI), has been opposing the steel project since the day the company had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Orissa Government in 2005 for setting up of a steel mill at Jagatsinghpur, Orissa.
The MOU was signed for setting up the steel mill with an investment of Rs. 51,000 crore, the biggest ever foreign direct investment in India. The hostages include three Korean nationals and one Indian. The villagers took them hostage at around 10 A.M. before reaching Jatadhari river mouth where POSCO is planning to establish a captive port near the proposed steel plant site.
The persons taken hostage are: K.S. Choi and S.H. Nam, both senior General Managers, T.J. Ahn, General Manager ad Deepak Ojha, Assistant Manager.
President of POSCO Pratirodh Sangam Samiti Abhay Sahu said that they would not release these persons until they are assured in writing that the company would not set up its plant in the area spread over three gram panchayats - Dhinkia, Nuagaon and Gadakujang - in Jagatsinghpur district.
Warning:
The leadership in India should keep it in mind that certain countries are terribly against the development of India and so they hinder in every step of its progress by instigating poor villagers and force them to do anti-national activities. The leaders at the helm of affairs are committing abominable anti-national sins by ignoring such actions.
