Kumaraswamy to resign as Chief Minister today, Governor informed

MIL/IR/Agencies, Oct 8, 2007

Bangalore:  October 8, 2007 - Finally, Mr. H D Kumaraswamy said on Monday that he would be resigning from the post of Chief Minister by 6 pm today and confirmed having conveyed to state Governor Rameshwar Thakur after the JDS legisture meet at 5-30 pm.

After meeting the Governor, Kumaraswamy had left for Padmanabhanagar to hold consultations with his father and JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda.

Though Kumaraswamy was to convene the assembly session on October 18 to seek the floor test, the BJP as well as Congress placed their demand before the Governor to dismiss the Govt.

After the JDS` refusal to honor the power-sharing pact, the BJP yesterday withdrew support to the 20-month-old JDS-BJP coalition government, reducing it to a minority.

There is nothing surprising about resignation of Kumaraswamay from the Chief Minister ship, it had to happen this way, it is a serious political error on the part of HD Deve Gowda to back out from his promise and that is likely to cost him heavily poltically. IR Summary).

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy will resign on Monday evening, Home Minister M P Prakash confirmed. He also said that the Janata Dal-Secular legislature party would be convened later in the evening and thereafter the Chief Minister would place his papers before them before taking the floor test.

This move comes in the wake of the tough talk by Governor Rameshwar Thakur during his meeting with the chief minister earlier during the day.

The chief minister had conveyed to him that he would face the floor test on October 18 and a special session of the assembly too had been convened in this regard.

The governor was, however, blunt in his reply and said it was his prerogative to call for a session. He also told the chief minister that he will have to submit his papers failing which he may have to dismiss him.
