Artificial life created in lab is no surprise – Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist
MIL/Guardian/Interiew, Oct 7, 2007. Sofia Nitin Raj
London: October 7, 2007 – Sofia Nitin Raj, who is at present in London, invited the attention of Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist from India, and drew his attention on the invention by Craig Venter, the American Biologist, who told the British Media that he has successfully built a synthetic chromosome out of laboratory chemicals and is expected to announce the creation of the first new artificial life form on the Earth very soon.
Sofia: “Dr. Raj Baldev, you are Cosmo Theorist from India and also author of “Two Big Bangs Created the Universe” (Formed in Eternal Space). I have read your book; you have explained how the birth of Universe has taken place along with a touch of the origin of life. You are also Head of SAROUL, an institute of Scientific Advance Research of Universe and Life”. In addition, you wrote a book “How Genes control the Body” in 1957, what are your comments?”
Dr. Raj Baldev: It is a great achievement from the point of view of Craig Venter, the American Biologist, but it is no miracle. The new species is a form of bacteria, which in my opinion; any common biologist can do it. In fact, we can create as many types of bacteria we want.
"Craig Venter is not alone but a team of 20 elite scientists assembled by Venter at his institute has already constructed a synthetic chromosome from lab chemical, that can also be classified as landmark achievement. Dr. Raj Baldev said, “ It is claimed that the man-made chromosome will be transplanted into an existing bacterial cell to take control of the cell. When the synthetic DNA takes over, the cell will be a new species.
“While critics acknowledge that artificially manufactured life forms could lead to such positive developments as new drugs or treatments for disease, the potential dangers could be equally unlimite,” Pat Mooney, director of ETC Group, a Canadian bioethics organization, told The Guardian.
"It could be a contribution to humanity such as new drugs or a huge threat to humanity such as bio-weapon.," Venter has provoked additional controversy by applying for a patent for the synthetic bacterium, The Guardian reported."
Sofia: Dr. Raj Baldev, could you give some unscientific example about the bacteria how they can be produced or developed for the basic knowledge of a common man?
Dr. Raj Baldev: “It may look to be somewhat unbelievable example, but it shall be a good example to start with. Take curd for example, these bacteria are created in a kitchen lab.
"Curd is a dairy product obtained by curdling or coagulating milk with rennet or an edible acidic substance such as lemon juice or vinegar and then draining off the liquid portion, called whey. Milk is left to sour with produce curds, and sour milk chees is also produced in this way.
"It’s better to take you to an Indian kitchen. In India, the word 'curd' is used to mean yoghurt. It is common practice to finish any meal with curd or buttermilk. In South India, it is considered necessary to have few cups of 'curd rice', made by mixing rice and yoghurt. And, in North India, ‘lassi’ is consumed. It is generally accepted to cool the body in tropical climates, counter the generally spicy cuisine of India and is nutritious.
"Even Cheese curds are popular in some French-speaking regions of Canada like Quebec and some parts of Ontario. This is equally popular in the Midwest of the USA."
Dr. Raj Baldev continued and finally said, “When further analysis of the bacteria, so-called new species, is announced, I shall be able exactly to tell the readers whether it is a miracle or a routine sort of things which have happened thousands of times earlier.”
