Musharraf wins Presidential Poll

MIL/Agencies, Oct 6, 2007

Islamabad: October 6, 2007 - Pakistan's Election Commission has decreed today that General Pervez Musharraf has swept the Presidential election. The Chief Election Commissioner Qazi M Farooq has told the Union Assembly that Musharraf has won 252 out of 257 votes cast.

The closest rival of Musharraf has got two votes while three votes were rejected.

After polling on Saturday, Chief Election Commissioner Qazi M Farooq told the National Assembly that Musharraf had won 252 of the 257 votes cast. His closest rival Wajihuddin Ahmed had won two votes, while three votes were rejected.

Of the four provincial assemblies, Musharraf is said to have won the majority numbers of votes, while the counting is still going on in the fourth one.

As per Supreme Court of Pakistan, Musharraf has to wait for legal confirmation of his victory in President Poll, but it is just a formality. In view of Musharraf’s being elect President today, there is little or no chance for the Supreme Court to reject the legality of his bid since he is already a winner.

The Supreme Court has to consider all pros and cons before accepting the legality of the bid of Musharraf which can turn very serious against the country if the Petition is not dismissed, which is fixed for October 17th. In fact, the petition challenging Musharraf’s decision to contest in uniform shall become infructuous after he wins the Presidential election.
