Rahul Gandhi upgraded as Congress General Secretary
MIL/Agenies, Sep 24, 2007.
New Delhi, September 24, 2007 -Congress party has named Rahul Gandhi, 37 years old MP and Sonia Gandhi’s son, as one of its General-Secretaries today, which shows that the party has scheduled to get ready for the early polls.
Rahul's appointment to the All India Congress Committee comes as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's coalition government struggles to retain the support of communist allies opposed to a landmark nuclear energy agreement with the United States, as per Reuters.
Thirty-seven-year-old Rahul's mother, Sonia, heads the ruling party and he made a surprise entry into politics ahead of national elections in 2004.
He entered parliament after contesting polls in the family borough of Amethi in the northern heartland state of Uttar Pradesh.
Rahul has gained quite substantial experience during his tenure as MP and young leader of the Congress party, and it is considered to be a wise decision by Congress veterans to bring Rahul to the fore to keep maintaining high prestige as Gandhi heir.
