Rule change enhances military powers of Musharraf
MIL/Los Angles Times, Sep 18, 2007. Laura King

Islamabad, Pak: September 18, 2007 – The change in rule by the election commission in Pakistan under which President Musharraf is enabled to stand for re-election, while serving as Military head, has created serious controversy in Pakistan.

Many questions arisen out of this amendment. Whether a compromise offer to political opposite leaders would stand or the President Musharraf’s regime would arrest Benizir Bhutto, when she enters Pakistan?

At the same time, though, the Supreme Court began hearing legal challenges to Musharraf's plan to remain army chief as he seeks reelection by lawmakers as head of state early next month. Question mark is serious whether President Musharraf would relinquish his military post after being reelected as President or before being inaugurated.

However, his party’s Secretary General, Mushahid Hussain Sayed told media that President Musharraf would take oath as a civilian President.

The political think tank in Pakistan feel that Musharraf has broken his promise of power-sharing talks with exiled former PM Benazir Bhutto. They think that even being close ally to the United States, President Musharraf would not be able to break laws openly as is being done, it shall adversely affect the reputation of the American administration, which President Bush would like to defend since Musharraf’s popularity is sharply declining.

At the same time, there is another problem for the US Administration that they cannot leave Musharraf in the lurch because his toppling could bring about a power vacuum and that would boost the Islamist militants. President Bush has every apprehension that Musharraf’s going out of military power could endanger the security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal.

But the poltical parties take it otherwise, they feel that if fair elections take place and Bhutto comes in power as Prime Minister, President Musharaff with Benazir Bhutto would certainly be able to maintain security and stability of the country and would not let the country go to the hands of the Islamic leaders.

Report from Los Angles Times talk of the election-related rulings by the newly activist high court, expected in the next week, are likely to prove the pivotal factor in Pakistan's tense political standoff.

A decree by the Supreme Court that Musharraf is ineligible to stand for reelection, for any one of a number of legal reasons being presented by opponents, would override Monday's declaration by the Election Commission.

But such a verdict could also provoke Musharraf to declare emergency rule or martial law. Either move would give him broad power to muzzle opposition and put off parliamentary elections, which are to be held by early next year.
