Aligarh: September 17, 2007 – On the merciless killing of Mohammad Mazhar Naeem of Meerut, a second year BSc student in the Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh, the authorities had no other option but to close the University sine die. Hundreds of students went on rampage, attacked the AMU staff club, the residence of the Vice-Chancellor and ultimately burnt the University proctor’s office.
Mohammad Mazhar Naeem of Meerut, a second year BSc student, was stabbed twice in the head and on the neck in a deserted lane near the university's sports complex. Though Police has ruled out any political motive in the murder, it is cautious in watching the situation. However, a judicial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
Although the situation is now normal, the university has asked girl students to vacate the hostel.
Naeem was, however, rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college where he was declared brought dead.
AMU spokesman Dr Rahat Abrar said that the motive behind the killing of the student has not yet been ascertained and is being investigated.
Rapid Action Force and PAC personnel have been deployed in the varsity campus where the situation was said to be tense but under control as per PTI.
